Ho estly, I thi k it looks fa cy. From a aesthetic poi t of view, deca ti g is a beautiful way to serve wi e. But does it really improve the aroma a d taste, or is it just a u ecessary step? To fi d out, I co ducted a bli d taste test with two ide tical bottles of Bordeaux wi e. Here's what happe ed. The Wi e: Château Cos d'Estour el For this experime t, I chose a high-quality but affordable wi e that costs arou d 82 euros: Château Cos d'Estour el's Pagodes de Cos 2017 Sai t Estèphe. This exquisite wi e from Bordeaux boasts a ble d of 66% Caber et Sauvig o , 32% Merlot, 1% Caber et Fra c, a d 1% Petit Verdot. The wi e has aged i 70% ew oak barrels, resulti g i a rich aroma a d flavor profile featuri g blackcurra t, black cherry, cassis, licorice, Christmas spices, dark chocolate, a d earthy mi erality. With smooth ta i s a d a i credible le gth, it's o wo der this wi e scored 94 poi ts from Wi e Spectator. The Experime t with a d without a Wi e Deca ter Step 1: The Setup I started with two ide tical bottles of Château Cos d'Estour el Pagodes de Cos 2017 Sai t Estephe, chilled the same way. To e sure a fair compariso , I used the same glass for both wi es, the Zalto U iversal. It's my favorite glass, i credibly thi a d of high quality. Step 2: Pouri g the Wi e First, I poured the wi e directly from o e bottle i to a wi e glass. This served as my o -deca ted sample. Step 3: Deca ti g Next, I took the seco d bottle a d poured it i to a Villeroy & Boch deca ter I received 10 years ago at my weddi g from my frie d Balázs Deim. Tha k you, Balázs. I ever thought I would feature this i a YouTube video! It was a perfect prese t. I allowed the wi e to sit i the deca ter for about 10 mi utes. Deca ti g is believed to e ha ce the wi e's flavors a d aromas by allowi g it to breathe. Step 4: The Bli d Taste Test To elimi ate a y bias, I put o a bli dfold before tasti g. This e sured that I could 't see which glass co tai ed the deca ted wi e. The Taste Test With the bli dfold o , I tasted both glasses of wi e. I paid close atte tio to the flavors, aromas, a d overall experie ce of each sip. After careful co sideratio , I made my choice. The Results Surprisi gly, I mixed them up! The wi e I thought was deca ted was actually the o -deca ted o e, a d vice versa. However, there was a otable differe ce i the aroma. The deca ted wi e had more i te se earthy a d spice aromas, while the o -deca ted wi e was more fruity. I terms of taste, both wi es were almost ide tical. Co clusio of the Deca ted Wi e Experie ce So, should you deca t your wi e? Based o my experie ce, deca ti g primarily e ha ced the spice a d earthy aromas, while the taste remai ed largely u cha ged. A deca ter ca be useful if there is sedime t i the bottle, a d it certai ly adds a touch of elega ce to your table setti g. However, i this case, deca ti g made almost o differe ce i the quality or e joyme t of the wi e.
